died so that is the latest from the scene in redwood city. back to you guys. >> thank you. some developing news we're following this morning am a judge could decide at any moment whether to grant oscar pistorius bail. the olympic track star cried in court again this morning. he is charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. she was shot to death inside his home on valentine's day. he claims he thought she was an intruder. pistorius's lawyers say he is too famous to flee bail and should be released from jail until his trial. a shooting, a crash and a fiery explosion all on the vegas strip. this morning a massive manhunt now for the gunman in three states including here in california. it started yesterday with a fight outside the aria hotel. bullets flew from a range rover into a maserati as both cars raced down the boulevard. the result, a fiery crash involving several vehicles. three people died, one of the

victims and the owner of that maserati kenneth cheri an aspiring oakland rapper. >> ran over there to help the dude in the maserati, pulled him out and tried to give him some cpr. he was breathing at that time but ambulance came and i don't think he made it. >> officers are still looking for the black range rover with out of state paper dealer plates. they have now issued alerts in california, arizona and utah. meanwhile bay area friends and family told kpix 5 that cherry moved to las vegas to find a safer and better life. [ rap ] >> his stage name was kenny clutch and in this music video he is actually cruising the vegas strip in a maserati. his loved ones lit candles last night in oakland on the street where he grew up. >> i can't believe that that happened to him. he was a good dude. i'm just distraught. i don't understand what's going on. >> cherry's cousin said he left behind three children, a 2-year-

old, a 3-year-old and newborn daughter. according to the "oakland tribune," cherry had been arrested several times in oakland and berkeley mostly on gun charges. the san jose woman who lied about finding a finger in a bowl of chili at wendy's is facing more jail time. investigators say anna ayala concocted a story to cover the fact that her son shot himself in the foot. when the pieces didn't fit, ayala was arrested. she could be behind bars for four years. back in 2005, she claimed to find a dismembered finger in a bowl of chili but it turned out that her husband had bought the severed finger from a wendy's employee and it was all an unsuccessful attempt to try to get money from the fast food chain. i remember that happening. >> yeah, i do, too. she is in more trouble now. >> very bizarre. 5:04 right now. >> never is the forecast more important than on a friday because the weekend is approaching. >> got the weekend coming up, guys, and i think it's looking great. we'll see a lot of sunshine outside as high pressure is building in overhead. still a bit chilly if you are stepping outside this morning

but that is not a big surprise. out there now motorsly clear skies. they are lighting up the new lights there on the bay bridge and looking pretty this morning. the temperatures though cool in the valleys 39 concord, 36 livermore and 35 degrees in santa rosa. by the afternoon that ridge of high pressure should bring us lots of sunshine occasionally we'll see some high clouds over the top of the ridge but that's the worst of it. otherwise, we are looking good. temperatures more seasonal today usually in the low to mid- 60s. today we'll be very close to that maybe even a little above in santa rosa at 65. about 64 degrees the expected high in concord. and 63 degrees in san jose. more on that weekend forecast coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. we'll start off with a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza where the bay bridge is moving fine. we can call it "friday light" no metering lights yet and i'm not seeing any major roadwork on the upper deck this morning either. to the san mateo bridge. 92 both directions, fine between hayward and foster city. now, if you are heading along

101 or heading into redwood city along the peninsula, of course we still have a traffic alert. you may have heard our live reporter on the scene. cate caugiran mentioned that bayshore road was still shut down at seaport boulevard so this may impact travel trying to get to the port of redwood city this morning. mainly an industrial area but it sounds like the investigation is going to continue for a while. so expect that road closure to continue for at least the first part of the morning drive. that is a check of your morning commute. back to you guys >> thank you. the bay bridge still on schedule for its labor day opening but work came to a screeching halt when a crane collapsed under the new bridge. hundreds of tons of steel falling with it. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is on treasure island where people are amazed nobody was hurt and it happened right in the afternoon too, right, anne? >> reporter: yes. and it caused a lot of noise and a big scare for anybody who saw the crane go down. nobody was hurt. construction on the bay bridge right behind me is expected to resume this morning as is the

investigation into exactly what happened. when the crane was working below the deck of the new eastern span it collapsed around noon. it was lifting a large steel segment when it slipped loose and fell on a barge taking the crane down with it. just grazing the bridge on its way down. >> the crane tipping over only caused some cosmetic damage to one of the crossbeams of the new east span. it just scraped some paint. there is no apparent damage to the structural integrity of the bridge. >> reporter: two floating cranes had been taking down the underlying support structure which was temporary anyway so it was supposed to come down. the suspension span is now holing up the road. but obviously taking that structure down with it. as frank said everything is on schedule right now for the bay bridge opening which is set for september 3. now, coming up in the next half hour, we'll have a closer look at the aftermath of this accident. an in-depth look from the water where everything landed.

right now live on treasure island, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> glad no one was injured. thank you. protestors are staging a sit-in at city college of san francisco. they want students to have more input on how to save the college from losing its accreditation. the school has three weeks to submit a plan for improvement. last summer major problems were found by a commission that oversees community colleges in the western united states. the commission threatened to pull the school's accreditation unless it provides an outline for sufficient improvement. that deadline is three weeks from today. california and seven other states may not get waivers for certain requirements of the "no child left behind" education law. california failed at its first attempt at a waiver and now faces a thursday deadline to submit a new application. meanwhile, a coalition of 10 california school districts including oakland and san francisco unified is trying to get its own waivers. leaders of that group met recently with u.s. education secretary arne duncan. other bay area headlines

have been on scene since 2:00 this morning when a single car we understand at this point slammed into a fire hydrant and fence and again that person was killed. they have set up a large scene in the area, police have taped off a large area. we're hearing about 200 yards so again, you want to avoid that whole area. we're hearing a couple of hours it could be closed and we have a live reporter on the scene there. we have launches chopper 5 so we'll bring you a continuous live picture of the area throughout the morning. this is a look at the golden gate bridge obviously flowing okay this morning heading into san francisco heading into doyle drive and that part of the city. so far the drive time coming through marin county 14 minutes on southbound 101 between 580 and the toll plaza. milpitas drive westbound 237 doesn't start to slow down until about 7:45 a.m. right now no incidents or delays that could slow you down for the silicon valley commute. let's check some of our other

decision in short ord. the olympic track star the blade runner cried in court as he awaits that decision this morning. he is charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. she was shot inside pistorius's home on valentine's day. he claims he thought she was an intruder. his lawyers say he is too famous to be a flight risk and should be released from jail until the trial. today is the fourth day in the dramatic week of testimony. this morning, a woman was killed in a car accident in redwood city. she was driving down east bay shore road at seaport boulevard around 2:30 this morning. there are reports her car hit a fire hydrant. she was ejected and the car kept going. redwood city police have shut down traffic in both directions as their investigation continues. work is expected to resume on the new bay bridge this morning after crews cleared the debris from a crane collapse. construction came to a crashing halt when a crane working below the deck collapsed along with 100 tons of steel.

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is on treasure island this morning and anne, it's amazing no one was injured. >> yes. the investigation into how this all happened is expected to continue this morning as is construction work. it's halted yesterday. it's back on today after that crane that was working below the deck of the new eastern span collapsed just after noon yesterday. it was lifting a large steel segment when it slipped loose and fell on to a barge taking the crane down with it. our ken bastida got a close-up look at the aftermath yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: the red section that you see the sparks coming off of right now is the upper section of the crane that came crashing down. just behind that to the left is a piece of the falsework, the iron work that held up the roadway. that came crashing down as well on the barge. now we are going to swing over underneath the bridge and you will see the original crane

start no delays are expected there. at least not because of weather around here. around the country could be a different story though. 75 degrees, partly cloudy into houston. 39 in denver. rain and snow. 37 with rain and snow in chicago. 43 in new york. temperatures today will be warming up a few degrees. plan on 63 degrees in san jose. 62 mountain view. 62 union city. east bay numbers as high as 62 in livermore, 63 in brentwood. and about 65 degrees in the napa valley. lots of sunshine inside the bay should bring temperatures to 62 degrees in alameda. 63 in berkeley. and about 64 degrees in sonoma. as we look toward the weekend we may cool down the temperatures just a little bit on saturday. but by sunday we warm right back up. and by the middle of next week, some of these temperatures getting near 70 degrees, elizabeth. >> look at that. that is a good-looking forecast. thank you, lawrence. well, if you are riding bart this weekend, expect delays at least in some of the late night hours. they are doing that ongoing maintenance work.

they have been doing this for the past couple of weeks. they are in the transbay tube. crews will shut down one of the tunnels in the tube set to begin at 10 p.m. tonight. we understand the tunnel should be reopened by the time bart opens for business on saturday morning. so the delays we're talking are more like 10 to 15 minutes just a heads up. elsewhere, let's check minneapolis right now. everything is so far -- let's check mass transit right now. everything is on time for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. we are continuing to watch this problem in san jose. we are hearing that drivers may be experiencing delays right now on capitol expressway and tully road an injury accident with a car and vta bus. police have told us that the injuries to people -- there were no injuries to anyone on the vta bus so that'sed good news. one person in the car was taken to the hospital and again there may be road closures in the area. we have launched chopper 5 to head quickly towards this scene so we can get a better idea of what's going on. here's a live look outside through milpitas. westbound 237 coming around the

minutes. united airlines plans to keep its boeing 787 aircraft grounded until early june. meanwhile, there's word that boeing will go to the faa today with plans to fix the plane's battery problems. the 787 dreamliner has been grounded since 2 incidents last month. japanese investigators say they have found an oil leak that was caused by an improper paint job that disabled a switch and they are still looking now into that battery problem. >> giants fans who want to take a ferry from larkspur to the game will likely pay a little more this season. a one-way ticket will cost $9 with a $2 service fee added on. the total is one dollar more. a public hearing on the changes is tentatively planned for march 7. researchers at lake tahoe have reeled in a catch. you have to see it to believe it. >> so-called monster goldfish that may end up hurting the lake's pristine blue waters. experts say these are the same

species that are sold in pet stores. they are just a whole lot bigger as you can see. some are more than a foot and a half long. researchers believe the goldfish are introduced by people just emptying fishbowls or aquariums into the waterways. they confirm the fish are a new threat now to lake tahoe's ecology. >> small things that people do can have a large impact when you consider that, you know, probably not just one person doing it. >> scientists are worried that algae that's created from the goldfish waste may reduce lake tahoe's clarity. >> it's a sound too familiar for man's best friend. it's the world's cutest frogs. jail. >> starting out a little chilly around the bay area but lots of sunshine coming our way. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up. >> good morning, friday february 22. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time 6:00. we begin with some breaking news. a car hit a vta bus. let's get right to elizabeth with more. >> reporter: there are roads closed because of that accident in east san jose. the accident happened around 5:15 this morning. and you can see chopper 5 is showing that vta bus involved in the accident. so we got off the phone with police. vta spokesman, as well. tells us a driver ran a red light and hit that vta bus. one person was taken to the hospital. we don't know if the person was in the car or the bus. it's a vta commuter express bus 103. this is a bus not a vta rail line so this won't have a huge ripple effect on vta delays.

this is east capitol expressway and tully where police are on scene. they have the intersection blocked off. so avoid that area. it looks like the bus is just sitting there on scene. fire crews have left. we notice passengers from the bus hanging out on the side of capitol expressway and tully. so we are not sure what's going to happen with them, either. elsewhere let's go get a check of the major roads in the south bay. you can see a lot of green on 101, 280, and the drive times are still all in the clear. we'll have more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you guys. a judge could decide at any moment whether to grant oscar pistorius bail. he has been going over testimony and arguments for more than 90 minutes now. the olympic track star and double amputee known as the blade runner cried in court as he awaited the decision this morning. he is charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. she was shot inside his home on valentine's day.
